We the faculty, staff, family, and community of Raul Yzaguirre School for Success, have committed ourselves to providing and obtaining the highest standard of education in a culturally relevant setting. The pursuit of excellence is aimed at developing self-respect and pride among our students. Our ultimate goal is for them to become critical thinkers and lifelong learners.
The Raul Yzaguirre School for Success (RYSS) was born from a vision of the Tejano Center for Community Concerns’ leadership team to provide the highest quality education for children of the center’s surrounding neighborhoods. From its beginning, RYSS continues to remain committed to every student, regardless of their life circumstances, to provide a true college preparatory experience. At RYSS, it is our mission to prepare students not only to enter college, but to have each one graduate from a four-year university.
RYSS was founded in 1996, as one of the first open-enrollment charter schools approved by the Texas State Board of Education. It began operations in a small neighborhood rental building with an enrollment of less than 100 students. Since its modest beginning, RYSS has expanded, now occupying an entire city block in Houston, with an additional campus in Brownsville, Texas. RYSS enjoys a student enrollment in excess of 1,250 with approximately 900 students located at its two Houston campuses and 350 students at its Brownsville campus. In Houston, RYSS operates a primary academy with grades Kindergarten thru five and a college prep academy with grades six thru twelve. Brownsville is home to a second primary academy offering grades Pre-Kindergarten through eight.
As an open-enrollment charter school, RYSS admits students regardless of academic limitation; however, students who enroll at RYSS, along with their parents, are fully aware that students will enter a world of high expectations – academically and socially. RYSS is committed to shaping the minds and hearts of students to help them become valuable and productive members of our community, state, nation, and the global community. RYSS students learn not only for school, but for life.
